The ancient city of Patara in Antalya

Patara is a historic city dating back to the eighth century BC, located within the borders of the Gash district in Antalya and adjacent to sandy hills similar to those in the Egyptian deserts. The city includes antiquities indicating the presence of human life in it about 4000 years ago. It is also known as the capital of the Lycian Federation, which included 23 cities in the middle of the first century AD.

Professor Hawa Ishkan Isik, head of excavations in Patra, says that the city known as the cradle of civilizations takes its visitors on a journey through history, with its antiquities dating back to different periods of time, from the Romans to the Ottomans.

Patara includes antiquities and tales from several eras from Alexander until Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The excavations indicate that Saint Nicholas, known as (Papa Noel) was born in Patara in the fourth century and lived there as a child.

In addition to the Lycian Federation Council building, the oldest naval lighthouse, a Roman bath, a waterway, the entrance to the historic city, and the Roman amphitheater, which represents the architectural transition between the Hellenistic and Roman periods and is considered one of the largest Roman theaters in Anatolia with a capacity of 6000 people.

The number of visitors to Patara has expected to exceed half a million tourists. According to the Turkish professor in her meeting with Anatolia, the historical city began hosting artistic and cultural events in conjunction with the completion of the restoration of the Roman theater in it.

She added that the theater was able to preserve its nature and originality after the restoration work; the meeting building of the Lycian Union Council had located directly next to the theater. The building is considered one of the most historical monuments in the city that visitors come to see. The French philosopher (Montesquieu), the author of the theory of separation of powers, described the Lycia Union as The best republican model of the year.

The Patra Gate is one of the most prominent gates of ancient cities that are recommended to visit due to its unique architectural characteristics and its preservation in its condition until today. Other monuments that draw attention are the marine lighthouse, the port bath, and the columned street. It also includes an important technological heritage, and the wireless telegraph station had established in 1906. It was the only link between the Ottoman state and its last lands in northeastern Africa.
